Congratulations, And I Meant It, Mostly

There is a sentence that a great many people have said at work while something inside them was doing something else entirely.

Congratulations. I am really pleased for you.

Picture the woman saying it. She is standing by somebody's desk. The person she is saying it to is a colleague she genuinely likes, who has just got a role she also wanted, and who is having one of the best days of their year.

And she says it, and she smiles, and she means it.

And she also does not mean it, and both of those are true at the same moment, and she walks away from that desk with a specific and horrible question, which is: how much of that was a lie?

That question is the thing this message is for, because the answer she reaches is almost always wrong.

She concludes that she is a hypocrite. That underneath the pleasant surface she is a resentful person who has just performed something she does not feel. And she carries that verdict about herself for weeks, and it is heavier than the disappointment was.

Here is what actually happened. She felt two things at once. Gladness for a friend, which was real. Grief for herself, which was also real. Neither one was a performance, and neither one canceled the other.

The mistake is arithmetic. She assumed that a heart can only hold one thing at a time, so if the grief is real, the gladness must have been fake.

That is not how a person works, and it is not how Scripture describes anybody either.

Paul puts both in one line

There is an instruction in Romans that is famous, and the fact that both halves are in the same sentence is the important part.

Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. (Romans 12:15, King James Version)

Two opposite responses, in one line, given to the same group of people, in a chapter about how to live in a community.

Paul is not describing two different kinds of Christian. He is describing a room where both things are happening at once and expecting everybody in it to do both.

And in the office on that morning, both were happening. Somebody was genuinely rejoicing and somebody was genuinely grieving, and they were the same two people standing at one desk.

You are being asked for both rather than for one, and Romans 12 puts rejoicing and weeping in a single sentence to the same people (Romans 12:15), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a mixed heart possible rather than requiring a tidy one.

And notice that no priority is given. He does not say rejoice first and deal with your own grief later. They are listed as equals.

You have not been asked to rank your feelings, and Romans 12:15 lists both responses without putting either one above the other (Romans 12:15), and the Spirit of God is the one who holds both in a person at once without either one being false.

Sorrowful, yet always rejoicing

There is a line in Corinthians where Paul describes his own state, and it is one of the strangest and most useful sentences in the New Testament.

As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. (2 Corinthians 6:10)

As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing.

He is not describing a sequence. He is not saying he was sad and then cheered up. He is describing a simultaneous condition, and he lists three pairs of it, as though he expects to be misunderstood if he only gives one.

That is a man saying plainly that two opposite true things can occupy the same person at the same moment.

You are described accurately by a man who lived in the same condition, and 2 Corinthians 6 says as sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing in one clause (2 Corinthians 6:10), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a description of health rather than of confusion.

And if that is true of an apostle, then a woman saying congratulations at a desk while grieving a job is not a hypocrite. She is a person with a heart in normal working order.

You have a heart doing exactly what a heart does, and 2 Corinthians 6:10 gives three separate examples of two things being true at once (2 Corinthians 6:10), and the Spirit of God is the one who removes a false charge that somebody has been carrying for weeks.

What this is not

Let me be plain, because this could be used badly.

This is not saying that all resentment is fine. There is a real thing that can grow, where a person starts hoping somebody fails, and that is worth naming honestly and bringing to God. That is a different matter from a mixed heart on a difficult morning.

It is also not promising she gets the next one. Nobody can promise that.

And it is not saying she should tell the colleague. She should not. Congratulations does not need a footnote and the other person is entitled to their good day.

And plainly: if the disappointment has gone somewhere heavier, if it has stopped lifting, if you cannot get out of bed, or if some part of you has begun wanting it all to stop, that is bigger than a role. Call or text the 988 crisis line, and say the true version out loud to a doctor or a counselor or a pastor you trust. Asking is not weakness.

You are not being told that everything you feel is fine, and Romans 12 asks for two real responses rather than for the absence of any (Romans 12:15), and the Holy Spirit is the one who can sort a mixed heart from a souring one, which no article is able to do.
