There is a woman in about half the pews in the country, and nobody has ever preached a sermon that had her in it.
Picture her. She is sixty two. She has been in church since she was nineteen. She has heard, by a conservative estimate, something over two thousand sermons.
A great many of them have been about purpose, and destiny, and what God has for your life, and stepping into what you were made for.
And she worked in a bakery for nine years, and then in the office of a haulage firm for thirty one, and she raised three children, and she looked after her mother for the last four years of her mother's life.
She has never once heard any of that described from a pulpit as anything other than the background to a life rather than the life.
That is the thing worth naming precisely. Nobody has told her that her life was worthless. Nobody would ever say that and nobody thinks it. What has happened is subtler and it has taken forty years. The examples are always somebody else's. The illustration is always a missionary, or a man who left everything, or somebody who found their thing at fifty and started a charity.
Her week has never been an illustration. Not one time.
And after forty years of that, a person quietly concludes that their life is the thing sermons are addressed to rather than the thing sermons are about, and that there was a bigger version available that they somehow missed.
The instruction that describes her week
There is a sentence in First Thessalonians that describes an ordinary life directly, and it is one of the least preached instructions in the New Testament.
And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you. (1 Thessalonians 4:11, King James Version)
Study to be quiet. Do your own business. Work with your own hands.
The word behind study there is a strong one. It means to be ambitious, to make it your aim, to strive after. Paul takes the word people use for pursuing honor and applies it to living quietly.
That is not a small aside. That is an instruction, given as a command, to be ambitious about an ordinary life.
You are described directly in an instruction rather than assumed as background, and 1 Thessalonians 4 uses a word about ambition and attaches it to a quiet life (1 Thessalonians 4:11), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a woman of sixty two hear her own thirty one years in a sentence for the first time.
And look at the reason given in the next verse, because it is not what anybody expects.
That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing. (1 Thessalonians 4:12)
That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without. The people outside. The neighbors, the customers, the drivers coming into a haulage office.
The purpose given for an ordinary working life is how it looks to the people around it, and that it does not leave anybody in need.
You have a purpose named plainly for an ordinary life, and 1 Thessalonians 4:12 gives it as walking honestly before the people outside (1 Thessalonians 4:12), and the Spirit of God is the one who has been doing that in her for forty years while she waited for something else.
What is required of thee
There is a verse in Micah that most people can quote and very few notice the size of.
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? (Micah 6:8)
That is the whole answer to the whole question, and it fits in one line.
And notice what is not in it. There is no occupation in that verse. There is no destiny in it. There is no finding of a thing. Three verbs, all of them about how a person conducts themselves, all of them available in a bakery.
You have been doing what is required rather than waiting to find it, and Micah 6 names three things and not one of them is a job (Micah 6:8), and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a woman read her own forty years against that verse and find them there.
And the context of that verse is a person asking what enormous thing God wants. The passage before it offers thousands of rams and rivers of oil, escalating, desperate. And the answer comes back smaller than any of it and completely achievable.
You are not being asked for something you never managed to find, and Micah 6:8 answers an escalating question with three ordinary verbs (Micah 6:8), and the Spirit of God is the one who makes small enough to do into the same thing as good enough.
What this is not
Let me be plain, because this could be heard as bitter and it must not be.
This is not saying the preachers were wrong to preach about purpose. Some people do get sent somewhere and it is real and those sermons are for them.
It is also not saying she should feel nothing about the forty years. There is a real loss in never having your life described, and naming it is not ingratitude.
And it is not saying that she should now believe her life was secretly enormous. It was an ordinary life, and the point is not that it was secretly extraordinary. The point is that ordinary was never the second tier.
And plainly: if the sense of having missed something has become the kind of weight that does not lift, if you cannot get out of bed, or if some part of you wants it all to stop, that is bigger than a sermon. Call or text the 988 crisis line, and say the true version out loud to a doctor or a counselor or a pastor you trust. Asking at sixty two is not too late.
You are not being sold a consolation, and Micah 6 answers the biggest possible question with the smallest possible list (Micah 6:8), and the Holy Spirit is the one who can make that land as relief rather than as a downgrade.
So here is the turn, and it does not require anything to have been different.
You are the person that instruction was written to, and 1 Thessalonians 4:11 says work with your own hands as a command rather than as a fallback (1 Thessalonians 4:11), and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence written to a small church and lays it over nine years in a bakery and thirty one in a haulage office.
Now the counterfeit, and after forty years of it, it does not sound like an accusation. It sounds like an accurate summary of a life. It says: there was a bigger version and you never found it. Look at the shape of that. It names the person rather than a thing, it opens no door, and its only instruction is to file four decades as a near miss. Conviction from the Holy Spirit names one specific thing and always opens a door in the same breath.
You have not missed a bigger version of your own life, and Micah 6:8 gives three verbs as the whole of what is required and none of them is a destination (Micah 6:8), and that work belongs to the Spirit of God, who has been in the bakery and the office and the four years with her mother.
Nothing here promises anybody preaches it next Sunday. They probably do not. What is settled is that an ordinary working life is the direct subject of a New Testament command, that the word used is about ambition rather than resignation, and that forty years of it were never the background to anything.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, at the kitchen table in the afternoon light. You are in Christ, and that is what makes the authority to speak over your own life delegated rather than invented. God gave an instruction that names an ordinary working week directly, so speak to the feeling of never having been in the sermon, and then leave the outcome to Him.
- Feeling of never being in the sermon, you are real and it was not because my life was too small to mention. The Word of God says study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands.
- Idea that I missed a bigger version, you are put out in the name of Jesus. Micah 6 answers the whole question with three verbs and not one of them is a destination or an occupation.
- Father, First Thessalonians 4 says that ye may walk honestly toward them that are without. After decades of preaching about purpose I put my own forty years inside that verse, and I thank You that Your Spirit was in the bakery and the office and the years with my mother.
