There is an arrangement at work that has no script for it, and the people inside it usually handle it in total silence.
Picture the woman. Two years ago a new person joined her team and she trained him. Properly. She showed him the system, she explained the client history, she told him what to do about the Friday reports, and she sat with him for a whole afternoon in his first week when he was clearly overwhelmed and pretending not to be.
He was, and is, a nice man.
Last month he was made her team leader.
Now here is the specific thing about this that nobody prepares anybody for. It is not humiliation exactly. It is stranger than that. It is that every single day she now watches him do things she taught him, and she cannot say so, and there is no situation on earth in which saying so would be anything other than small.
He came to her desk on Tuesday to explain the Friday reports.
She said thank you, that is helpful.
And she went home and did not tell her husband about it, because she could hear how it would sound. He explained the reports to me. And he would say something loyal, and she would feel worse, because saying it out loud makes it into a grievance and it is not a grievance, it is just a thing that happens to be true.
So it goes unsaid, every day, and she is beginning to be a slightly quieter version of herself in meetings, which nobody has noticed and which she has not decided.
Two men, and the line one of them drew
There is a moment in Genesis that is exactly this arrangement seen from the other side, and it is worth reading for the sentence at the end of it.
Pharaoh puts Joseph over everything he has.
Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou. (Genesis 41:40, King James Version)
Only in the throne will I be greater than thou.
That is a man drawing one line and handing over everything on the other side of it. And the striking thing is how little the sentence costs him. He says it plainly, without anxiety, because he knows what he is and does not need to hold the rest.
Which is the opposite of what most workplaces run on, where people hold every inch because their standing is the only thing keeping them safe.
You are permitted to know exactly what you hold, and Genesis 41 has a man name his one line and hand over the rest without losing anything (Genesis 41:40), and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person be secure in a room where they are no longer the senior one.
And later in that story, Joseph says something about his brothers that is worth having.
Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. (Genesis 45:5)
Notice what he does not say. He does not say nothing bad happened. He does not tell them it was all fine. He names it directly, that they sold him, and then he speaks about what God did with it.
You are allowed to name the thing accurately and still not be run by it, and Genesis 45 has a man say plainly what was done to him in the same breath as what God did (Genesis 45:5), and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that possible without any pretending.
Esteem, and what it actually asks
There is an instruction in Philippians that is used to shut people up and is not doing that at all.
Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. (Philippians 2:3)
Esteem other better than themselves.
That is not an instruction to believe an untrue thing about your own competence. That would be a lie, and lies are not humility.
It is an instruction about where attention goes. Esteem is about regard and treatment, not about self assessment. It means treating the other person as genuinely worth something, which is a thing you can do while knowing perfectly well that you taught them the Friday reports.
You are not required to believe an untrue thing about your own competence, and Philippians 2 asks for esteem toward the other rather than a low opinion of yourself (Philippians 2:3), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes real regard possible without requiring anybody to pretend.
And notice the first half of the verse. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory. It is aimed at the motive, not at the facts.
You have facts that are allowed to remain true, and Philippians 2:3 addresses the motive rather than asking anybody to revise the record (Philippians 2:3), and the Spirit of God is the one who deals with a motive gently rather than by demolition.
What this is not
Let me be plain, because this could go wrong.
This is not saying she should tell him she trained him. She should not. He almost certainly remembers, and if he does not, telling him changes nothing and costs her a great deal.
It is also not saying he does not deserve the job. He may be genuinely better suited to leading than she is, and those are different skills.
And it is not promising her turn comes. Nobody can promise that.
And plainly: if this has begun to reach past work, if you have started to feel that you are being written out of your own life, if you cannot get out of bed, or if some part of you has begun wanting it all to stop, that is bigger than a team change. Call or text the 988 crisis line, and say the true version out loud to a doctor or a counselor or a pastor you trust. Getting help is not a lack of faith.
You are not being asked to perform contentment, and Genesis 45 has a man name what was done to him out loud rather than smoothing it over (Genesis 45:5), and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hold a true grievance and a genuine goodwill in one person.
So here is the turn, and it happens on the way home.
You are the one who taught him, and Genesis 41:40 shows a man naming exactly what he holds without needing to hold everything (Genesis 41:40), and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a scene in an Egyptian court and lays it over a desk where somebody is explaining the Friday reports.
Now the counterfeit, and in a generous person it wears humility as a disguise. It says: if you were really humble, this would not bother you. Look at the shape of that. It names the person rather than a thing, it opens no door, and its only instruction is to add shame to an ache that is entirely ordinary. Conviction from the Holy Spirit names one specific thing and always opens a door in the same breath.
You have not failed at humility, and Philippians 2:3 asks for esteem toward another rather than a false opinion about yourself (Philippians 2:3), and that work belongs to the Spirit of God, who was there for the whole afternoon in his first week when she sat with him.
Nothing here promises a change of arrangement. What is settled is that a man may name his own line without losing anything, that facts are allowed to remain true, and that a woman who trained her own team leader is not required to forget it in order to be gracious.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the car on the way home. You are in Christ, and that is what makes the authority to speak over your own work delegated rather than invented. God let a man name his own line and hand over the rest, so speak to the sting of having taught the job you did not get, and then leave the outcome to Him.
- Sting of having trained the one they chose, you are real and you are not proof that I taught him too well. The Word of God has a man saying only in the throne will I be greater than thou, and naming a line costs nothing.
- Voice that calls minding a fault, you are put out in the name of Jesus. Philippians 2 asks me to esteem him, which is about regard and not about revising what I know I did.
- Father, Genesis 45 has a man saying plainly what was done to him and what You did with it in the same breath. I say one true thing out loud today and then I get on with my work, and I thank You that Your Spirit was there the whole afternoon I sat with him.
