There is a category of worker that nobody has a word for, and there are millions of them.
Picture the woman. On paper she is a scheduling coordinator at a company she does not care about. What she actually is, is the reason her daughter has the medication that keeps her out of hospital.
That is not a dramatic way of putting it. It is the plain arrangement. The job has the insurance. The insurance covers the thing. Without the job there is a gap, and in the gap is a child.
So she does not have a job. She has a rope, and she is holding it, and she has been holding it for six years.
And here is what that does to the ordinary parts of a working life. Every irritation becomes a threat. A restructure announcement is not annoying, it is terrifying. A bad review is not a bad review, it is a crack in the only thing standing between her daughter and a very bad year.
She cannot afford to be tired at work. She cannot afford to be off. She got flu in February and worked through it, not out of dedication, but because the arithmetic of being ill has a child in it.
And nobody at that company knows any of this. To them she is a reliable, slightly intense woman who never takes sick days.
And the loneliest part is not the pressure. It is that being somebody's provision is a role with no rest in it, and no acknowledgment, and no way to put it down for an afternoon, because the rope does not stop being a rope when you are tired.
He arranged it from the cross
There is a moment in John that is almost too practical for the scene it happens in, and that is exactly why it belongs here.
Jesus is dying. It is the most theologically enormous moment in history. And in the middle of it He does a piece of household administration.
When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! (John 19:26, King James Version)
Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. (John 19:27)
He is arranging his mother's care.
Think about what that means about how He regarded the subject. He did not treat provision as a lesser matter to be sorted out afterward by somebody more practical. He handled it Himself, at the last possible moment, with three words in each direction.
You are doing something Jesus made time for at the very end, and John 19 has Him arranging his mother's household care from the cross itself (John 19:27), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a comfort rather than a curiosity.
And notice the last clause. From that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. It became somebody's actual daily responsibility, in a house, with meals in it.
You have been given a role that Scripture treats as real work rather than as background, and John 19:27 records the practical outcome and not only the words (John 19:27), and the Spirit of God is the one who dignifies six years of holding a rope for a child.
Who provides, and who carries
There is a sentence in Philippians that gets quoted at people carelessly, and read properly it is exactly the right size for this.
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)
Notice who the subject is. My God shall supply. Not a salary. Not vigilance. Not the fact that no sick day has been taken in three years.
That is not a promise that the job is secure. It is a statement about who the supplier actually is, in a letter written by a man in prison to people who had just sent him money, which is to say written in a context where human provision and divine provision were plainly the same event.
You are not the source of your daughter's supply, and Philippians 4 makes God the subject of the sentence about supplying need (Philippians 4:19), and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a woman hold a rope without believing she is the only thing in the world holding it.
And that distinction is not a technicality. There is an enormous difference between being the means of provision, which she is, and being the source of it, which she is not, and living for six years as though she were the source is what has removed the rest from her life.
You have been the means rather than the source, and Philippians 4:19 names the riches as His rather than as anybody's employment (Philippians 4:19), and the Spirit of God is the one who takes the weight of sourcing off somebody who was only ever asked to carry.
What this is not
Let me be plain, because this could do real harm if it were misread.
This is not saying the job does not matter. It matters enormously. Nothing here is telling anybody to hold it more loosely in a practical sense, or to be less careful.
It is also not promising the job is safe. Restructures happen. That is a real fear and it is not being dismissed.
And it is certainly not saying that if something went wrong it would be a failure of faith. That sentence has done more damage in churches than almost any other and it is not in this article.
And plainly: if the pressure has become the kind you carry alone at three in the morning, if you cannot get out of bed, or if some part of you has begun wanting it all to stop, that is bigger than a job. Call or text the 988 crisis line, and say the true version out loud to a doctor or a counselor or a pastor you trust. A person holding a rope needs somebody holding them.
You are not being asked to loosen your grip, and John 19 has the arrangement made carefully rather than left to work itself out (John 19:27), and the Holy Spirit is the one who is present in the practical details rather than above them.
So here is the turn, and it does not require the job to change.
You are the means of a provision whose source is elsewhere, and Philippians 4:19 says my God shall supply all your need according to his riches (Philippians 4:19), and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence written from a prison and lays it over a woman holding an insurance policy together for six years.
Now the counterfeit, and in somebody carrying this it does not sound cruel, it sounds like responsibility. It says: if you slip, she pays for it, so you can never put anything down. Look at the shape of that. It names the person rather than a thing, it opens no door, and its only instruction is to be a function rather than a human being. Conviction from the Holy Spirit names one specific thing and always opens a door in the same breath.
You have not been made the last line of defense in the universe, and John 19:27 has Jesus arranging care rather than leaving one person to hold everything alone (John 19:27), and that work belongs to the Spirit of God, who has been in that house for all six years and has never once been off duty.
Nothing here promises the job is safe. What is settled is that provision was arranged carefully by Christ Himself at the worst possible moment, that the supplier named in the letter is God rather than an employer, and that a woman holding a rope is allowed to be a person while she holds it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, by the fire or the window or wherever it is quiet. You are in Christ, and that is what makes the authority to speak over your own household delegated rather than invented. God arranged somebody's care Himself at the last possible moment, so speak to the weight of being the whole reason somebody is safe, and then leave the outcome to Him.
- Weight of being the whole reason she is safe, you are heavy and you are not mine to carry by myself. The Word of God says my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory.
- Belief that I am a function and not a person, you are put out in the name of Jesus. John 19 has Him arranging his own mother's care from the cross, which makes provision a thing He handles and not a thing I hold alone.
- Father, John 19 says from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. I say her name out loud tonight and I say one thing I need, and I thank You that Your Spirit has been holding this rope with me for six years.
