There is one word that changes a life without changing a single fact in it, and most people who use it about themselves cannot remember picking it up.
Stuck.
Picture the woman who uses it. She says it easily now. I am stuck in that job. She said it twice last week, once to a friend and once to her sister, and both times it landed as a small complaint and everybody moved on.
Here are the actual facts of her situation, and they have not changed in four years. She works in a place she does not love. She could leave. Leaving would mean her son changes school in the middle of an exam year, her mother loses the room she has been in since her fall, and the house payment becomes impossible for about eight months.
So she does not leave.
Now watch what happens depending on which word gets used about that.
If she is stuck, then she is a person to whom something has been done. There is no agency in it. She is in a trap, and traps are things you fail to escape, and a person in a trap wakes up every day inside a small daily failure.
If she is choosing, then she is a woman who has weighed a son's exam year and a mother's room against her own preference and has decided, four years running, in favor of the two people who cannot decide for themselves.
Same job. Same money. Same Mondays. One of those is a cage and one is a decision, and the only difference between them is a word she picked up somewhere and never examined.
And the word is not neutral. It has been doing work. It has been quietly telling her, twice a week for four years, that she is a person things happen to.
Joshua said it in the present tense
There is a sentence at the end of Joshua that everybody has on a plaque, and the tense in it is the whole point.
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. (Joshua 24:15, King James Version)
Choose you this day.
He is speaking to people who had already been following God for decades. They were not at a starting line. And he tells them to choose, today, again, as a present tense act rather than as a settled historical fact.
Which means a decision made years ago can be made again this morning, and making it again is what turns it from a thing that happened into a thing being done.
You are choosing today rather than living inside something that was decided once, and Joshua 24 says choose you this day to people who had chosen long before (Joshua 24:15), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an old decision current instead of leaving it as history.
And notice what Joshua puts in the sentence. As for me and my house. The choice is not private. It is made in front of everybody, and it is made on behalf of a household.
You have been choosing on behalf of a house, and Joshua 24:15 puts the household right into the sentence rather than leaving it a personal preference (Joshua 24:15), and the Spirit of God is the one who dignifies a decision made for people who did not get a vote.
Choose life, and the lot fell
There is a moment in Deuteronomy where the instruction is almost startlingly direct.
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live. (Deuteronomy 30:19)
Therefore choose life. And then, immediately, that both thou and thy seed may live. The choosing is tied to descendants in the same breath. It is a decision made with children in it.
You are making a choice with your children inside it, and Deuteronomy 30 attaches the seed to the choosing in the same sentence (Deuteronomy 30:19), and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps that from being a burden and lets it be a dignity.
And there is a psalm line about a portion that is worth having when the choice is not the one a person would have picked.
The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot. (Psalm 16:5)
Thou maintainest my lot. A lot in that world was a piece of land assigned by drawing, not chosen by preference. And the psalm does not say the lot was ideal. It says somebody is maintaining it.
You have a lot that is being maintained rather than merely endured, and Psalm 16 puts the maintaining in God's hands rather than in the circumstances (Psalm 16:5), and the Spirit of God is the one who does that maintaining in a job somebody did not pick.
What this is not
Let me be plain, because this could easily become word games.
This is not saying the job is fine because the word changed. It is not fine. She does not love it and this article is not asking her to.
It is also not saying that anybody who feels trapped is choosing wrong. Some situations genuinely are traps. Debt, an abusive workplace, a visa, an illness. Those exist and calling them a choice would be an insult.
And it is not a technique for feeling better. Words are not magic. What is being pointed at is narrower: whether the word she uses is actually accurate.
And plainly: if the word stuck has become something heavier, if you cannot get out of bed, or if some part of you has begun wanting it all to stop, that is not a vocabulary problem. Call or text the 988 crisis line, and say the true version out loud to a doctor or a counselor or a pastor you trust. Getting help is not a failure of faith.
You are not being asked to pretend, and Joshua 24 puts the real alternatives on the table rather than dressing anything up (Joshua 24:15), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an accurate word possible rather than a comfortable one.
So here is the turn, and it is one word.
You are choosing rather than trapped, and Joshua 24:15 puts the choosing in the present tense for people who had already decided long ago (Joshua 24:15), and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence from the end of a conquest and lays it over a Tuesday in a job somebody does not love.
Now the counterfeit, and after four years of a word it does not sound like anything at all, because it has become vocabulary. It says: you have no say in your own life. Look at the shape of that. It names the person rather than a thing, it opens no door, and its only instruction is to keep describing a decision as a trap. Conviction from the Holy Spirit names one specific thing and always opens a door in the same breath.
You have not been living inside something done to you, and Deuteronomy 30:19 hands the choosing to the person and puts their children in the same line (Deuteronomy 30:19), and that work belongs to the Spirit of God, who has been present for every one of those four years of decisions.
Nothing here promises the job improves. It probably does not. What is settled is that the choosing is present tense, that it is made on behalf of a household, and that a woman deciding four years running for her son and her mother is not a woman in a cage.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the kitchen with the radio off. You are in Christ, and that is what makes the authority to speak over your own decisions delegated rather than invented. God tells people to choose today rather than to live inside an old decision, so speak to the word you picked up somewhere, and then leave the outcome to Him.
- Word stuck that I picked up somewhere, you are not a description and you never once told the truth about me. The Word of God says choose you this day, and that was said to people who had already chosen years before.
- Idea that I have no say, you are put out in the name of Jesus. Deuteronomy 30 says therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live, and my children are in that sentence with me.
- Father, Psalm 16 says thou maintainest my lot, and a lot was assigned rather than picked. I choose this year again out loud for the people in my house, and I thank You that Your Spirit is maintaining what I did not choose.
