Work Was In The Garden Before Anything Went Wrong

There is a belief that almost nobody was taught directly and almost everybody holds, and it does a great deal of quiet damage to ordinary working people.

The belief is that work is part of the curse.

Picture the man who holds it. He would not put it that way if you asked him. But he thinks of his working week as the price of being alive, and he thinks of church on Sunday as the part of his life that has anything to do with God, and he has a settled sense that there are two tiers of activity and he spends five days a week in the lower one.

He has never checked where that idea came from.

And it does not come from Genesis, which is the only place it could come from, and the chapters are in the wrong order for it.

Because work appears in chapter two.

The curse appears in chapter three.

That is not a subtlety. It is the plain arrangement of the text, and everything follows from it. Work is placed in the account before anything at all has gone wrong, in a world that is repeatedly described as good, given to a man who is not yet in any trouble of any kind.

What chapter three adds is thorns. It adds difficulty, and sweat, and resistance. It does not add work, because work was already there.

Chapter two

Here is the verse, and it is worth reading slowly because most people have read past it a hundred times.

And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. (Genesis 2:15, King James Version)

To dress it and to keep it.

Two verbs, both of them work. Dressing is cultivating, which is the ordinary labor of a gardener. Keeping is guarding and maintaining, which is exactly the unglamorous continuing work that nobody photographs.

And the man is put there in order to do them.

Not permitted to. Not warned that he will have to. Put there, on purpose, for that.

You are doing something that was in the account before anything went wrong, and Genesis 2 has the man put in the garden to dress it and to keep it (Genesis 2:15), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes the order of two chapters matter on a Tuesday.

And the instruction before it is even larger.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it. (Genesis 1:28)

Subdue it. That is a working word. It is about taking raw material and making something of it, which is what a farmer does and a builder does and an engineer does and a person organizing a supply chain does.

You have been given a working instruction inside a blessing, and Genesis 1:28 puts subduing the earth in the same sentence as God blessing them (Genesis 1:28), and the Spirit of God is the one who was moving over the face of the waters in the second verse of the whole book.

What the curse actually added

Now read what chapter three adds, because being accurate about this matters.

Cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee. (Genesis 3:17 to 18)

Cursed is the ground.

Not cursed is the work. The ground. The material a person works with becomes resistant, and thorns come into it, and what was straightforward becomes hard.

Which is a precise description of an ordinary working life. The work itself is not the problem. The resistance is. The pointless meeting, the system that does not do what it should, the thing that has to be done three times.

You are dealing with thorns rather than with a cursed activity, and Genesis 3 puts the curse on the ground rather than on the working (Genesis 3:17), and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a man tell the difference between a hard week and a wrong kind of life.

And that distinction changes what a difficult day means. It is not evidence that he is in the wrong tier. It is thorns, which are expected, and which say nothing at all about whether the work itself belongs.

You have not been living in a lower tier for five days a week, and Genesis 2:15 has the work in place before there were two tiers of anything (Genesis 2:15), and the Spirit of God is the one who was present in the garden and is present in a warehouse.

What this is not

Let me be plain, because this could be misheard.

This is not saying every job is good. Some work is genuinely harmful and some workplaces damage people, and pointing at Genesis does not fix that.

It is also not saying that church and prayer do not matter. They do. What is being removed is the tiering, not the practice.

And it is not saying hard days are a failure of perspective. The thorns are real. Genesis says so.

And plainly: if the working week has become the kind of weight that reaches everywhere, if you cannot get out of bed, or if some part of you wants it all to stop, that is bigger than a theology of work. Call or text the 988 crisis line, and say the true version out loud to a doctor or a counselor or a pastor you trust. Getting help is not a failure of faith.

You are not being told your hard days are imaginary, and Genesis 3 names thorns and sorrow plainly rather than denying either (Genesis 3:17), and the Holy Spirit is the one who is honest about the difficulty and clear about where it came from.
