The Record He Does Not Keep

Here is a thing that happens to a person slowly enough that they never notice the mechanism.

Picture a man coming out of a ten minute conversation with his manager. Nothing dramatic happened. Nobody shouted. If you asked him to repeat what was said he could not do it, because there was nothing quotable in it.

There was a sigh at one point. There was a phrase about how this is not really the standard we are looking for. There was a small laugh at the end that made the whole thing feel like nothing, and made it impossible to raise.

And he walks back to his desk about two inches shorter than he left it.

That is fine, once. Everybody has had that. The problem is that this has been happening about twice a week for three years, and here is the arithmetic nobody does.

His manager has said something diminishing to him roughly three hundred times. In that same period, the number of people who have said out loud that he did something well is, generously, four.

So there is one account being kept of this man's working life, and it is being kept by one person, and that person is not neutral, and there is no competing record anywhere.

And a record with no competition is not an opinion any more. It becomes the truth. Not because it is accurate, but because it is the only entry in the book.

That is the actual injury here. It is not the sighing. It is that after three years a good and competent man has no independent account of his own work, and has begun to consult one man's face to find out what kind of worker he is.

God is described as a record keeper, and the framing is legal

There is a verse in Hebrews that most people read as comfort, and it is actually a statement about justice, which is much stronger.

For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. (Hebrews 6:10, King James Version)

Not unrighteous to forget. Read that construction carefully, because it is doing something unusual.

The writer does not say God is too kind to forget. He says forgetting would be unrighteous. It would be an injustice. He is putting the remembering of a person's work into the category of things God cannot do without ceasing to be righteous.

You are held in a record that it would be unjust to lose, and Hebrews 6 calls forgetting your work a thing God is not unrighteous enough to do (Hebrews 6:10), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about Tuesday rather than a fact about eternity.

And notice the last three words of the verse. And do minister. Present tense. The record is not a summary written at the end. It is being kept now, today, including the part of today that nobody in the building saw.

You have work being recorded today that no manager watched, and Hebrews 6:10 puts it in the present tense with the words and do minister, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps that ledger while a man is at a desk believing nobody is counting.

There is a book, and it was written in a bad year

There is a strange and beautiful moment in Malachi that belongs here exactly.

The context is grim. People are exhausted, they think serving God is pointless, and the ones doing wrong are visibly doing better than the ones doing right. It is a book about discouraged workers, essentially.

And then this happens.

Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. (Malachi 3:16)

A book of remembrance. Written, deliberately, in the worst year, about people whose good work was invisible to everybody around them.

That is not a metaphor about feeling appreciated. It is a second book, opened specifically because the first account being kept in that society was wrong.

You are written into a second book that was opened precisely because the visible account was inaccurate, and Malachi 3 has it written down while nothing on the surface had improved at all (Malachi 3:16), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a man able to believe there is a page with his name on it.

And notice who is in the book. People who spoke often one to another. It was written about ordinary people encouraging each other in a bad workplace, which is a very small thing to be recorded in heaven for.

You have been noticed for something too small to appear on anybody's review, and Malachi 3:16 records people simply speaking to one another in a discouraging season, and the Spirit of God is the one who counts the things that never make it into a performance summary.

What this is not

Let me draw the line clearly, because this could go wrong in two directions.

This is not telling anybody to confront that manager. It is not. That man may hold this reader's income in his hands, and an article that has never met him has no business sending somebody into a conversation whose cost only they can see.

It is also not telling anybody to take it to HR, or to start building a file, or to get into a process. Some readers should. Most cannot, safely, and this message will not pretend to know which is which.

And it is not saying the criticism is always wrong. Sometimes a manager is right about a thing. What is being challenged is not the content of one remark. It is the arrangement where one person's remarks are the only entry in the book.

And plainly: if being managed by this person has begun to reach past work, if you cannot get out of bed, or if some part of you has started wanting it all to stop, that is not a workplace problem any more. Call or text the 988 crisis line, and say the true version out loud to a doctor or a counselor or a pastor you trust. There is no faith in carrying that alone.

You are not being sent into a fight, and 1 Corinthians 4 has Paul treating another person's judgment of him as a very small thing rather than as a battle to win (1 Corinthians 4:3), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that possible without requiring anybody to become hard.
