I Trained The One They Thanked

Here is an ache that a great many people have and almost none of them will describe, because describing it makes them sound like a worse person than they are.

Picture the man. Eleven years ago he showed a nervous twenty three year old how to do the job. He sat with him. He explained the thing twice, and then a third time without sighing. He told him what to say to the difficult client and how to say it. He covered for him the week he made the big mistake, and never told anybody about it.

That twenty three year old is now forty six and runs the department, and yesterday, at a company event, somebody stood up and said what a difference he had made.

And the man who taught him clapped. Genuinely. He is proud of him. That part is not fake.

And there is something else sitting underneath the clapping, and it is not envy exactly, and the fact that he cannot name it accurately is part of why it stays.

The closest words for it are these. There is nobody left who knows. The people who could confirm that this began at his desk have retired or moved. In eleven years the story has smoothed over, the way stories do, and now the department's success simply belongs to the man running it, which in every practical sense it does.

And he would never say a word about it, because saying it would take something from a man he genuinely loves, and because it sounds petty said out loud, and because it is not even really a complaint.

What it actually is, is a person watching something real about their own life become unverifiable.

The chain is the plan

There is a sentence Paul wrote to Timothy that is one of the most quietly radical instructions in the New Testament, and the structure of it is what matters.

And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. (2 Timothy 2:2, King James Version)

Count the links in that chain. Paul, to Timothy, to faithful men, to others also. Four generations of handing over, in one sentence.

And notice what happens to Paul in that structure. By link three, he is invisible. The others also will never have heard of him. They will learn from somebody who learned from somebody.

That is not presented as a sad outcome. It is presented as the design.

You are inside a design where being handed on is the point, and 2 Timothy 2 lays out four links in one sentence with the first one disappearing by the third (2 Timothy 2:2), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that feel like a purpose rather than like a disappearance.

And Paul was not naive about the cost of it. He wrote that letter from a prison, near the end, with most people having left him. He was not writing about handing over from a comfortable position.

You have not been asked to enjoy the fading, and 2 Timothy 2:2 was written by a man in a cell who names the chain anyway, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a teacher be honestly glad and honestly sore in the same afternoon.

He must increase

There is a sentence from John the Baptist that is famous and is almost never read as a workplace sentence, which is exactly what it is.

His own disciples come to him and point out, in effect, that the new man is getting all the crowds now. They are indignant on his behalf. And here is what he says.

He must increase, but I must decrease. (John 3:30)

Now that is a sentence about Christ and it is not a general principle about ambition. But look at the emotional structure of it, because it is honest in a way people miss. He does not say the decrease is painless. He says it is right.

Two things can be true. It is right, and it costs something.

You are permitted to feel the cost of a decrease that is genuinely right, and John 3 has a man state it plainly without dressing it up as easy (John 3:30), and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps that honest instead of forcing a false gladness on top of a real ache.

And there is a moment in Numbers where Moses is told to lay his hands on Joshua and transfer some of his own standing publicly.

And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient. (Numbers 27:20)

Some of your own honor. It is described as a real transfer, of a real thing, that the older man actually had.

You have given something real away rather than lost track of it, and Numbers 27 calls it putting some of your own honor on somebody else (Numbers 27:20), and the Spirit of God is the one who counts a transfer as a gift rather than as a subtraction.

What this is not

Let me be plain, because this could go wrong.

This is not saying he should tell people he trained the man. That would be true and it would also be a small thing to do, and it would not give him what he is actually missing.

It is also not saying the ache is envy and should be repented of. Envy wants the other person to have less. That is not what is happening here. He genuinely wants the man to do well and is glad that he is.

And it is not promising anybody will remember. Institutional memory is short and the people who could confirm it have gone. That is simply true.

And plainly: if this has begun to reach past work, if you have started to feel that your whole life has gone unrecorded, if you cannot get out of bed, or if some part of you has begun wanting it all to stop, that is bigger than a company event. Call or text the 988 crisis line, and say the true version out loud to a doctor or a counselor or a pastor you trust. There is no faith in carrying that alone.

You are not being asked to feel nothing about it, and John 3 has a man name a right decrease without once pretending it was comfortable (John 3:30), and the Holy Spirit is the one who can hold gladness and soreness in the same chest without either one being a lie.
