My Name Was Not On The Email

Here is a wound that is genuinely small, and that is exactly what makes it hard to carry.

Picture the man reading it. The project finished on Friday. On Monday morning the director sent a thank you email to the whole department, and it named twelve people.

He is not one of them.

He worked on it for five months. He wrote the piece that made the second half possible. His absence from the list is not a judgment, it is an oversight, and he knows that, and he could name the exact reason: he sits in a different building and was not at the launch.

And it stings. It has stung since twenty past nine on Monday and it is now Thursday.

And here is the part that makes it worse rather than better. He cannot mention it to anybody.

If he told his wife, she would be indignant and he would immediately feel he had made too much of it. If he mentioned it to a colleague he would be the man who counts the names on emails. If he raised it with the director, an apology would be issued within a minute and would be worse than the omission, because now it would be an apology to the man who noticed.

So he carries it alone, and it is too small to justify carrying alone, and that combination is exactly what makes a small wound last four days instead of four minutes.

And underneath it there is one honest sentence that he would not say out loud to anybody. It is not about the credit. It is that he would like, once, to be somebody whose name is on the list.

Paul spent his last page on names

There is a chapter at the end of Romans that most readers skip, and skipping it means missing something remarkable about what the writer thought was worth his final page.

Romans is arguably the most important theological document ever written. Sixteen chapters. And chapter sixteen is a list of people.

I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea. (Romans 16:1, King James Version)

That is how it opens, and it goes on for about twenty five verses of names. Greet this one. Greet that one and the church in their house. Greet the ones who worked hard.

Twenty six people are named. Some of them are named with one detail each, and the details are ordinary.

You are the kind of person the writer of Romans used his last page on, and Romans 16 spends twenty five verses naming ordinary people one at a time (Romans 16:1), and the Holy Spirit is the one who made sure that chapter is in the Bible rather than trimmed as an appendix.

And look at one of the entries, because the detail in it is almost throwaway.

Salute Tryphena and Tryphosa, who labour in the Lord. Salute the beloved Persis, which laboured much in the Lord. (Romans 16:12)

Which worked much. That is somebody's whole appearance in Scripture, and what got recorded about her was that she worked hard.

You have been recorded for the work rather than for a title, and Romans 16:12 names a woman and says only that she worked much (Romans 16:12), and the Spirit of God is the one who thought that detail worth keeping for two thousand years.

The names in the book

There is a moment in Philippians where Paul does something unexpected. He is asking a church to help two women who had fallen out, and he mentions somebody else and then stops short.

And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which laboured with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellowlabourers, whose names are in the book of life. (Philippians 4:3)

Whose names are in the book of life.

He does not list them. He may not have remembered all of them. And instead of leaving them anonymous, he points at a different list, one he did not write and cannot lose, and says that they are on it.

That is precisely the answer to the man reading an email with twelve names on it.

You are on a list that was not compiled by anybody in your building, and Philippians 4 points at names in the book of life for the ones the letter could not fit (Philippians 4:3), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an unlistable list feel like a real one.

You have not been left off the record that matters, and Philippians 4:3 exists precisely because a human list ran out of room (Philippians 4:3), and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps the other one accurately.

What this is not

Let me be plain, because this could get out of proportion in either direction.

This is not saying the omission was malicious. It almost certainly was not. It is an email written quickly by a busy person who forgot the man in the other building.

It is also not saying he should raise it. The apology would be worse than the wound and both of them know it.

And it is not saying he should stop minding. Minding is not petty. A name is how a person exists in a group, and being absent from a list is a real, small, human thing to feel.

And plainly: if the not being seen has begun to reach past work, if you have started to feel that you do not register anywhere with anybody, if you cannot get out of bed, or if some part of you has started wanting it all to stop, that is bigger than an email. Call or text the 988 crisis line, and say the true version out loud to a doctor or a counselor or a pastor you trust. Getting help is not a failure of faith.

You are not being told the ache is too small to have, and Romans 16 treats naming as important enough for a closing chapter (Romans 16:1), and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes an ordinary small wound seriously without inflating it.
